Role Overview

The Backend Lead Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing scalable backend systems that power real-time betting operations across Africa. The role requires a mix of technical leadership and hands-on development. You will architect critical system components, ensure reliability and speed, and mentor a team of backend engineers to deliver world-class solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable microservices that handle high traffic and large transaction volumes

• Architect event-driven and distributed systems for real-time betting operations

• Build high-performance APIs for web and mobile applications

• Optimize database performance and ensure zero data loss across systems

• Oversee the development of key backend services such as the wallet system, betting engine, and odds calculation

• Lead a team of backend engineers through mentorship, code reviews, and technical discussions

• Define backend engineering standards, system design patterns, and best practices

• Manage integrations with payment gateways, external APIs, and cloud infrastructure

• Set up CI/CD pipelines for seamless deployments and monitor system performance

• Implement robust security, data backup, and disaster recovery measures

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

• Minimum of 6 years backend development experience, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role

• Strong programming skills in C# and .NET Core

• Deep knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Redis, or MongoDB

• Experience in designing and maintaining microservices architectures

• Hands-on experience with distributed systems and message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ

• Proven ability to optimize performance in high-traffic environments

• Working knowledge of cloud technologies such as AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes

• Strong understanding of API design, system reliability, and security best practices

• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

Preferred Experience

• Background in fintech, betting, or payment processing systems

• Familiarity with real-time data pipelines and event streaming

• Experience in DevOps, CI/CD, and monitoring tools

• Knowledge of Nigerian payment systems and cloud cost optimization
