Role Summary
The Biomedical Engineer will be part of the project team responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of an 8-floor, 350-bed international hospital. The role involves planning, evaluating, and integrating advanced medical technologies, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission International (JCI) standards, and adopting global best practices.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, clinicians, IT specialists, and equipment vendors. The role also requires embedding eco-friendly practices in line with the hospital’s solar-powered sustainability model.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Planning and Specification
- Develop complete equipment plans for clinical and non-clinical departments.
- Prepare technical specifications and align with architectural and engineering designs.
- Deliver department-specific equipment lists and specifications within 60 days of project engagement.
Vendor and Procurement Management
- Evaluate vendors and negotiate cost-effective biomedical technologies.
- Ensure all procurement meets budget and delivery targets.
- Secure cost savings without compromising quality.
SLA and Warranty Management
- Draft and manage Service Level Agreements and warranty terms with vendors.
- Monitor vendor performance and ensure SLA compliance.
- Maintain documentation for contracts, renewals, and claims.
- Achieve high levels of vendor compliance on equipment uptime and service response.
Installation, Integration, and Commissioning
- Oversee delivery and installation of critical hospital equipment.
- Ensure smooth integration with IT systems (EMR, PACS, HIS).
- Guarantee proper commissioning of Tier-1 equipment well before hospital handover.
Regulatory, Safety, and Quality Compliance
- Ensure compliance with JCI, ISO, FDA/CE, and Nigerian regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and quality reviews.
- Maintain international standards across all biomedical devices.
Lifecycle and Maintenance Planning
- Create preventive maintenance schedules for all equipment.
- Set up spare parts inventory and service agreements.
- Maintain high equipment availability in the first 24 months post-installation.
Stakeholder and Project Coordination
- Act as liaison between medical planners, clinicians, contractors, and vendors.
- Provide technical input in meetings and ensure integration of biomedical designs into project execution.
Training and Capacity Building
- Design and deliver training for biomedical technicians and clinical staff.
- Ensure all staff are competent in equipment handling and safety protocols.
Sustainability and Innovation
- Integrate eco-friendly biomedical technologies into the hospital project.
- Support energy efficiency and innovative solutions to enhance healthcare delivery.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field.
- 7–10 years of relevant experience, preferably in hospital construction projects.
- Experience working with JCI-accredited healthcare facilities.
- Strong expertise in diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy, surgical, and intensive care equipment.
- Knowledge of digital health systems and hospital IT integration.
- Strong project management and vendor negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement ability.
