Position Overview

AMCE Abuja is seeking a highly skilled Gastrointestinal Surgeon and Endoscopist to join their team. This specialist will be responsible for diagnosing, treating, and performing endoscopic management of various gastrointestinal disorders. The role requires expertise in both endoscopic procedures and complex surgeries, aimed at treating conditions such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal motility disorders.

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in the early detection and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and other digestive diseases, using advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to improve patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Lead a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, and nurses to provide coordinated care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards to review GI cancer cases and recommend evidence-based treatments.
  • Mentor junior doctors, surgical trainees, and medical students in surgical and endoscopic practices.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and best practices for gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopy.
  • Foster a culture of patient-centered care, safety, and quality within the department.
  • Strategic Development:
    • Implement strategies to expand and enhance GI surgical and endoscopic services.
    • Collaborate with hospital leadership to align GI services with the organization’s goals.
    • Engage in clinical research to advance gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopic techniques.
  • Governance:
    • Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines, regulations, and accreditation standards.
    • Lead audits and quality improvement initiatives to monitor patient outcomes.
    • Participate in governance meetings, advising on risk management and quality control.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Conduct pre-operative assessments, surgical planning, and post-operative care.
    • Stay updated with advancements in gastrointestinal surgery and incorporate new techniques.
    • Provide expert consultations for complex GI cases within the Clinical Directorate.
  • Equality and Diversity:
    • Lead Equality & Diversity efforts in the Estates and Facilities department.
  • Staff Development:
    • Work with HR to recruit, retain, and manage staff, ensuring continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Collaboration:
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare specialists.
    • Actively participate in departmental meetings and engage with external organizations to promote GI services.
  • Management:
    • Supervise, mentor, and manage junior surgical staff, ensuring efficient use of resources and maintaining high care standards.
    • Oversee scheduling and staffing for surgical and endoscopic sessions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MD, DO, or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a residency/fellowship program in Surgery (General Surgery or relevant specialty).
  • Board certification or eligibility in Surgery from a recognized certifying body.
  • Valid medical license to practice surgery in your home country and meet registration requirements with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a consultant surgeon, with experience in performing a wide range of surgical procedures.
  • Proven clinical excellence and a commitment to patient safety and evidence-based practices.
