Project Background

Northeast Nigeria is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis. Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are living in host communities without access to basic livelihoods and essential services. These conditions have resulted in rising levels of food insecurity and malnutrition.

FHI 360 has been active in Nigeria for over 30 years and has been part of the humanitarian response in the Northeast for more than five years. As part of a new and ongoing project in this region, we are looking for a qualified Assistant Technical Officer, Laboratory Services.

Job Overview

The Assistant Technical Officer, Laboratory Services will support the delivery of high-quality laboratory services as part of FHI 360’s humanitarian health response. This role includes providing technical assistance, implementing lab procedures, and contributing to quality assurance at the facility and LGA level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering care to vulnerable populations
  • Process laboratory specimens, conduct tests, and report results accurately
  • Operate laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Maintain accurate records of specimens, test results, equipment logs, and technical analyses
  • Identify issues and initiate corrective actions where needed
  • Follow standard procedures for quality control and infection prevention
  • Support data collection with technical and M&E teams
  • Compile and submit regular reports
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality assurance and control
  • Skilled in using lab equipment and conducting diagnostic tests
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within diverse teams
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills
  • Fluent in English and Hausa, with excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in computer use and reporting
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time

Qualifications

  • BSc in Laboratory Sciences or a related field
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of relevant experience after NYSC
  • Current license to practice as a medical laboratory scientist
  • Prior experience working in humanitarian settings is an advantage
  • Familiarity with the Nigerian public health system, NGOs, and CBOs is highly desirable
