Job Description

The Cardiothoracic Nurse will provide specialized care to patients undergoing surgical procedures involving the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs within the chest cavity. The role requires strong clinical expertise, teamwork, and patient-centered care throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver evidence-based nursing care before, during, and after cardiothoracic surgeries including CABG, valve replacements, lung resections, transplants, and thoracotomies
  • Monitor patients closely to ensure safe recovery and positive outcomes

Preoperative and Postoperative Care

  • Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and self-care routines
  • Prepare patients for surgery by completing assessments and ensuring adherence to safety protocols
  • Support recovery by monitoring surgical sites, preventing infection, and facilitating rehabilitation

Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Work alongside surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and respiratory therapists to provide seamless care
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and clinical rounds
  • Provide intraoperative support including handling instruments, maintaining sterility, and assisting surgeons

Clinical Expertise and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records and medication charts
  • Use advanced equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, and cardiac monitors
  • Follow strict infection prevention and control procedures

Professional Development and Compliance

  • Stay updated with best practices in cardiothoracic nursing
  • Adhere to hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Mentor junior nurses and nursing students when required
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc) or equivalent
  • Current Nursing and Midwifery Council license (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 2–3 years nursing experience, with at least 1 year in cardiothoracic care
  • Specialty certification in cardiothoracic or critical care nursing (CCRN)
  • BLS and ACLS certifications are required
