A dynamic retail company is seeking a qualified and experienced Junior Accountant to join their team. This role involves managing the financial operations of a diverse business portfolio, which includes pharmacies, supermarkets, and beauty salons. The ideal candidate will ensure the accuracy of financial records, maintain compliance with regulations, and provide key financial insights to support strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Oversee the general ledger and handle the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes.
  • Reconcile accounts including bank statements, receivables, and payables.
  • Manage and monitor cash flow to ensure adequate funds for operations.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Develop and manage budgets for all business units.
  • Conduct variance analysis and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and performance reports for the business.

Taxation and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with local tax regulations, including VAT, PAYE, and corporate taxes.
  • Prepare and file accurate tax returns and liaise with tax authorities as required.
  • Adhere to financial regulations and company policies to maintain compliance.

Internal Controls and Auditing

  • Develop and enforce internal controls to protect business assets and operations.
  • Create processes and policies, including procurement procedures and internal audit plans.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors, identify risks, and suggest improvements to financial processes.

Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, encouraging professional development.
  • Collaborate with department heads to provide financial guidance and assist with decision-making.
  • Work closely with external auditors, tax consultants, and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as ACA, ACCA, or ICAN are highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience in the retail or service industry is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and Nigerian tax laws.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
