Position Overview

Job Title: Company Secretary / Head of Legal

Location: Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

The successful candidate will act as the primary advisor to the Board of Directors on compliance and corporate governance issues. This role covers legal advisory on business transactions, contract management, litigation oversight, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. It also involves close collaboration with stakeholders across all subsidiaries to safeguard the Group’s legal interests.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft, review and interpret legal documents including contracts, service agreements and transaction papers
• Provide practical legal advice to leadership and business units on day-to-day matters and strategic projects
• Conduct legal research and prepare opinions on commercial, operational and regulatory issues
• Monitor laws and regulations relevant to the Group and ensure ongoing compliance
• Handle regulatory filings, license renewals and regulatory correspondence
• Implement and maintain compliance frameworks across the Group
• Support litigation case management, liaise with external counsel and maintain a litigation tracker
• Identify and evaluate legal risks, recommending mitigation strategies
• Contribute legal input to audits, risk reviews and regulatory assessments
• Collaborate with internal departments, regulators and external counsel to resolve legal and compliance matters
• Respond to legal and regulatory inquiries across the Group
• Mentor and oversee legal staff, helping to develop in-house capability
• Promote a strong legal and compliance culture across the organization

Candidate Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years post-call legal experience in the financial services sector or related industries
• Proven track record in a senior legal role, preferably within a financial holding company or its subsidiaries
• Strong knowledge of financial services regulations, corporate governance and compliance
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic legal counsel to senior executives

Remuneration

N800,000 – N1,200,000 per month
